Bacteria and B Guide - Resources and Review

An educational resource covering bacteria, fungi, viruses, biological control, environmental microbiology, disease of plants, human and animals. It provides illustrated profiles of microorganisms in 28 categories, such as slime moulds, penicillin and other antibiotics, airborne microorganisms, yeasts and yeast like fungi, lichens and myxobacteria.

Annotated list of bacterial names, arranged alphabetically and chronologically, providing the official nomenclature of bacteria and the nomenclatural changes as cited in the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names and the International Journal of Systematic Bacteriology.

Pictures and information on selected genera of algae and protozoa, with links to resources in protistology and related fields.

Information about bacteria and microbiology for the public. Covers bacterial structure, disease causing microbes, an introduction to the prokaryotes, and the normal bacterial flora of animals.

Monthly journal devoted to the advancement and dissemination of fundamental knowledge concerning (i) infections caused by pathogenic bacteria, fungi, and parasites; (ii) mechanisms of pathogenicity and virulence factors such as toxins and microbial surface structures; (iii) factors involved in host resistance inflammation and susceptibility to infection; (iv) immunology of microbial infection; and (v) development and evaluation of vaccines against pathogens.

An introduction to infections and diseases, describing the mechanisms of microbes, covering bacteria, viruses, and protozoa. Defines the nature of infection, various means of transmission, and recommends methods of prevention.

Journal that offers reviews of developments in clinical microbiology and immunology, covering the fields of bacteriology, virology, mycology, and parasitology. Abstracts and tables of contents available.

An article setting out the findings of a study into eukaryotes in extreme environments. The major headings under which the data are organised are Anaerobes, Thermophiles, Psychrophiles, Acidophiles, Alkalophiles, Halophiles, Barophiles and Xerophiles.

Set of links to journals relevant to microbiology. Some have only subscription information online, others have tables of contents, abstracts or full text.

The official journal of the International Committee on Systematic Bacteriology of the International Union of Microbiological Societies. IJSB publishes articles concerning the systematics of bacteria, yeasts and yeast
like organisms, including taxonomy, nomenclature, identification, characterisation, and culture preservation. Published quarterly.

Project dedicated to compiling a knowledge base describing the genes and intermediary metabolism of the bacterium E. coli. Describes each pathway and bioreaction of E. coli metabolism, and the enzyme that carries out each bioreaction, including its cofactors, activators, inhibitors, and the subunit structure of the enzyme. When known, the genes encoding the subunits of an enzyme will be listed, as well as the map position of a gene on the E. coli chromosome. In addition, the KB describes the chemical compounds involved in each bioreaction, listing synonyms for the compound name, the molecular weight of the compound, and in many cases its chemical structure.

Twice monthly periodical devoted to publishing research on genetics and molecular biology, structure and function, enzymes and proteins, physiology and metabolism, cell surfaces, plant microbiology, plasmids and transposons, bacteriophages, eukaryotic cells, population genetics, and evolution.

Set of links to selected, evaluated and annotated Internet resources relevant to parasitology.

Set of documents about food safety and the organisms that can cause food borne illness. Includes facts sheets on bacteria, parasites, viruses and natural toxins, where they are found, how they are transmitted, symptoms of disease and advice on how to control the organism to prevent food diseases. Topics include Salmonella, giardia, hepatitis, e coli, fish and shellfish toxins.

Research information on blue
green algae, including CyBib, a research bibliography with over 5,300 references, an image gallery, taxonomic information and links to relevant genome databases.

The Dutch node of the Microbial Information Network Europe (MINE), CBS maintains and distributes collections of cultures such as fungi, yeasts, bacteria, phabagen, aphyllophorales and fusarium. Databases can be searched by species name, strain number, or properties of species and strains. Also provides identification and research services, and offers consultancy, information services and training courses.

Data about the E.coli K12 chromosome including a genetic map of E.coli K12 providing locations of coding or regulatory regions, sequence contigs and location and orientation of EMBL files, a table of the ECDC sequence contigs, together with source and length information and a searchable index.

Support organisation for families whose children have been affected by GBS, a bacterial infection in new
born babies and infants of up to 3 months of age. Includes information on the condition, preventing infection, and treatments.

Factsheet on Escherichia coli, offering information on recent outbreaks of E.coli, questions and answers about the bacteria, and links to related resources.

NEQAS is an international quality assessment service to clinical microbiology laboratories both in the UK and abroad. Includes a list of bacteria distributed for antimicrobial susceptibility testing.

Bacteriophages are viruses whose hosts are bacterial cells. They are metabolically inert in their extracellular form and they reproduce by insinuating themselves into the metabolism of the host. Includes pages indexed by family, as defined by genome type and virion morphology, resources for teachers and a brief history of bacteriophage research.
