Classification and C Guide - Resources and Review

A series of presentations delivered at the Cataloguing and Indexing Group in Scotland (CIGS) seminar, September 2001, available in PowerPoint or PDF format. 'Cataloguing the Hybrid Library' is the main theme with topics such as cataloguing of serials, issues of long term access to electronic materials, granularity, and collection descriptions among the more specific areas addressed.

Numerous links to Internet resources about cataloguing, covering descriptive and subject cataloguing, guidelines, DDC, MARC and OCLC.

Resources about the Dublin Metadata Core Element Set, a simple information resource description which also aims to provide a basis for semantic interoperability between other, probably more complicated, formats and is also intended to provide the basis for resource embedded description, initially with HTML documents.

An interdisciplinary society which aims to promote the scientific study of classification and clustering, including systematic methods of creating classifications from data.

CORC is a research project exploring the cooperative creation and sharing of metadata by libraries. It is designed to help both libraries and OCLC to move more quickly in coping with the huge amount of material available on the Web and to provide access to this material that can be integrated with access to their current resources. Features of CORC include authority control, RDF / XML import/export, integration of DC and MARC in single system, flexible harvesting of resources, Unicode support, assisted classification and subject heading assignment, automatic keyword extraction, automated data extraction, link maintenance and reference access
Z39.50, browsing interfaces.

Project examining quality control of Internet resources focusing on major subject gateways. Also describes methods and tools that have been created to assist staff in the maintenance of quality control.

The OCLC Internet Cataloging project coordinates a worldwide volunteer effort to identify, select, and catalogue Internet resources. Position papers and field reports from a meeting in 1996.

Based on a seminar organised jointly by Book Industry Communication and the UK Office for Library and Information Networking. Briefly describes Digital Object Identifier (DOI), Serial Item and Contribution Identifier (SICI), Book Item and Component Identifier (BICI), and Publisher Item Identifier (PII). Also summarises results of group reports and a plenary discussion.

Collection of links to resources supporting cataloguing efforts, including aids and tools like a Cataloguing Terminology Glossary, standards such as MARC, and approaches to organising Internet resources using metadata like Dublin Core.

Index of sites who are employing various classification schemes, or controlled vocabularies, to describe Internet resources. Arranged by type of classification scheme.

Project funded under DESIRE to study classification schemes currently being used to describe Internet resources. Covers major schemes such as DDC, UDC and LCC, international subject specific schemes such as NLM, and some national general schemes.

OCLC is as non

It operates the PRISM service for cataloguing and resource sharing, provides online reference systems for both librarians and end users, and distributes online electronic journals. Site includes information about OCLC, its services and products, news releases, publications, and research results.

Full text of a report to the British Library Research and Development Department from the CATRIONA 1 project, based at Strathclyde University Library. The study concludes that the idea of a distributed catalogue of Internet resources integrated with standard Z39.50 library system OPAC interfaces (and hence, with retrieval of information on hard copy resources) is already a practical proposition at its most basic level.
